One block of East Broadway between Quebec and Main streets is closed as of 7 a.m. Monday as construction on Vancouver’s Broadway Subway Project continues.

The closure will detour drivers along East 8th Avenue for four months while workers rebuild the road above the new Mount Pleasant station.

The Broadway Subway Project will extend TransLink’s Millenium Line network west from the VCC-Clark Station to Arbutus Street, and will include six new underground SkyTrain stations.

The four-month road closure has been met with opposition from local businesses who say the disruption will further reduce the number of people visiting their shops.

According to a news release on the closure, there will be turn restrictions on the East 8th Avenue detour that vary during the day but traffic control personnel will be on site to manage vehicles.

“Drivers commuting through the neighborhood are encouraged to use one of the other east-west routes to minimize delays for transit vehicles and maintain access for local traffic,” the news release reads.

Sidewalks will remain open on East Broadway and access to businesses, services and residents will be maintained.

Following the four-month closure, one lane will re-open in each direction to start, and all lanes will reopen by summer, according to the news release.

Construction activities around the closure will happen from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and include backfilling, road repairs, crane activities, trucking, saw cutting, welding and landscaping.

Increased noise is expected.

According to the news release, police will initially be on site to help manage the flow of traffic and neighbourhood ambassadors will help pedestrians and cyclists navigate the area. There will also be updated signage and designated passenger and delivery zones.
