A man has pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of his wife and son in a remote B.C. community northwest of Prince George in 2024.
Orlan Marcel Dennis was charged after the killings and a lengthy standoff in the community of Tsay Keh Dene on April 9, 2024.
The Tsay Keh Dene First Nation is located about 360 kilometres north of Prince George, B.C., at the north end of Williston Lake.
In a court decision released earlier this week, the victims in the case were identified as Darlene Dennis and 18-year-old Dorian.
Orlan tried to withdraw his guilty plea, but Justice Simon Coval rejected his application.
He has not yet been sentenced in the case.
According to the decision, after Orlan fatally shot his wife and son, he refused to leave a house for several hours.
Police eventually had to launch tear gas into the house after a multi-hour standoff, the decision reads, and Orlan was shot in the hip and arm.
The civilian-led Independent Investigations Office (IIO) was tasked with investigating the circumstances of the police shooting after it happened.
IIO investigators look into any cases of serious harm or death involving police in B.C., and are asked to determine whether police action or inaction may have contributed to the serious harm.
In an update in February 2025, the IIO said that it found no reasonable grounds that any officer committed an offence in the case.
