The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) is looking into the death of a woman who was the subject of a Burnaby RCMP wellness check.
In a statement, B.C.’s police watchdog said health authority officials contacted Burnaby RCMP on March 18 to conduct a wellness check.
According to the IIO, a police officer gained access to the woman’s unit in a residential building shortly after 2 p.m. PT that day and found her unresponsive.
“She was later taken by an ambulance to a hospital where she was pronounced deceased the following day,” the statement reads.
The agency will look into whether police actions or inactions are connected to the woman’s death. No further details on her identity were shared.
If the investigation concludes that officers may have committed an offence, the IIO’s chief civilian director can recommend that Crown prosecutors lay charges.
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency that investigates all incidents involving police officers or detention guards in B.C. that result in serious harm or death.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the office.
