What to know about this afternoon’s update

Final steps of water main repair underway with emergency crews on standby

City crews have begun the last steps of returning service to the Bearspaw south feeder main. Emergency and city crews will be set up near the repair site in case another break happens during the final phase.

I’m Jennifer Keiller, a reporter in the CBC newsroom in Calgary.

City officials are set to give an update at 1 p.m. about restoring the Bearspaw south feeder main. It ruptured at the end of December, flooding a major road and stranding some people in their cars.

The pipe that broke carries 60 per cent of the treated water used in Calgary and surrounding municipalities.

The city has been asking people to use less water wherever possible for the past two weeks, by taking shorter showers, flushing the toilet less, and only running dishwashers and washing machines when absolutely necessary.

Many, many Calgarians will be watching today to hear whether water restrictions will be coming to an end. The city has previously said the rules could be lifted by the weekend.
